Grinding from the brakes usually gets a driver’s attention.
On this 2014 Lexus IS250, the driver could hear and feel the problem but was not sure whether it was coming from the front or rear.
The inspection answered that question.
The front brake pads had no remaining thickness.
The rear brake pads were still over 8 mm.
But the inspection also uncovered another problem that was much easier to miss from the driver’s seat.
All four tires showed significant wear along their inside edges.
The Grinding Was Coming From the Front Brakes
The road test confirmed brake noise and pointed toward the front of the car.
Once the wheels were inspected, the reason became clear.
The front brake pads had no remaining thickness, and the front rotors showed rust.
The rear brakes looked very different.
The rear pads still measured more than 8 mm.
That distinction matters.
The driver knew there was a brake problem but could not tell which end of the vehicle was causing the noise.
The inspection gave us the answer without assuming that all four brakes needed the same repair.

The Front Brake Repair Was Based on What We Found
The inspection showed that the front pads were worn out.
The front brake repair that followed included new pads, rotors and calipers.
The brake fluid was also serviced.
This was not a case of replacing front and rear brakes simply because the driver heard grinding.
The front and rear measurements told two different stories.
The front brakes required repair.
The rear pads still had substantial thickness remaining.
That is exactly why measuring and inspecting the components matters.
Then We Looked at the Tires
The tire condition was just as important.
The front left tire showed weather cracking and was bald along the inside edge.
The front right also had poor tread wear and was bald along the inside edge.
The rear tires were showing the same basic pattern.
The left rear had significant inside wear.
The right rear was bald along the inside edge.
So this was not an isolated problem on one tire.
The inspection showed a wear pattern affecting all four.

Inside Edge Wear Can Be Easy to Miss
A tire does not always wear evenly across the tread.
That matters because the portion visible from beside the car may not tell you what is happening across the entire tire.
On this Lexus, the serious wear was along the inside edges.
The inspection also noted poor alignment and recommended an alignment because of the tire wear pattern.
Four replacement tires were approved along with the alignment.
This is one of those cases where looking at the whole tread told us much more than simply checking whether the tire still had tread somewhere on its surface.
The Front Suspension Added Another Finding
The inspection also found the left front strut leaking.
The front struts appeared to be original, and replacement of both front struts was recommended.
That repair was approved.
The leaking strut and the tire wear are worth discussing together because both were findings in the same area of the vehicle, but we do not need to claim that the leaking strut alone caused the tire wear.
The inspection separately documented the strut leak and the poor alignment.
Both needed attention.

One Inspection Connected Several Problems
The Lexus came in with a brake concern and a request for tires.
The inspection helped turn those broad concerns into specific findings.
The grinding noise came from the front brakes.
The rear brake pads still had useful thickness remaining.
All four tires showed serious inside edge wear.
The alignment needed attention.
And the left front strut was leaking.
That gave the owner a much clearer picture of what the car actually needed.
Instead of treating every concern as a separate guess, the inspection showed the condition of the brakes, tires and suspension at the same time.
Why the Tire Wear Pattern Matters
Four tires can still have tread and need replacement.
Where the tread is wearing matters too.
On this Lexus, the inside edges were the problem.
That type of wear can be overlooked because it is not necessarily the first part of the tire you notice while walking around the car.
The inspection photos made the condition easy to see.
Once the tires were replaced, the vehicle also received a wheel alignment.
The Completed Work Addressed the Confirmed Findings
The approved work included:
front brake repair with pads, rotors and calipers
brake fluid service
four replacement tires
front strut replacement
wheel alignment
The important part is that each of those repairs followed an actual inspection finding.
The brake noise was confirmed.
The brake condition was measured.
The tire wear was photographed.
The leaking strut was visible.
And the alignment concern was documented along with the tire wear.
That is the kind of evidence that makes repair decisions easier to understand.
What Should You Check if Your Lexus Starts Grinding or Wearing Tires Unevenly?
Grinding brakes should be inspected promptly.
So should tires that appear to be wearing unevenly.
If one edge of the tire is wearing much faster than the rest, it is worth checking the full tire, alignment and suspension rather than simply replacing the tire and moving on.
The same goes for brake noise.
A driver may know that something sounds wrong without being able to tell which wheel is responsible.
That is where an inspection helps.
On this Lexus, the brake measurements, tire wear and suspension condition gave us the answers.
LEXUS IS250 FAQ
Why were the front brakes repaired but not the rear brakes?
The front pads had no remaining thickness. The rear brake pads still measured more than 8 mm during the inspection.
Why did this Lexus need four tires?
All four tires showed significant wear along their inside edges. Some areas were documented as bald.
Did the leaking front strut cause the tire wear?
The inspection documented both a leaking left front strut and poor alignment, but it does not establish that the strut alone caused the tire wear.
Why was an alignment performed after replacing the tires?
The inspection documented poor alignment along with severe inside edge tire wear, so a wheel alignment was included with the approved work.
How many miles were on this Lexus?
The vehicle had approximately 96,000 miles at the time of the inspection.
